And it was only $9.43. Thank you, Aldi.

Being poor for the holidays (like, worse than ever before) is no fun.

Actually, it isn't the holidays, it's the cold weather.
A Tibetan Perspective on the Environment and Environmentalism: Change your mind, change the world.

Basically I'm just going to type my notes as they are because I'm tired and have to wake up possibly before the monks, haha.

- We do not see the world correctly/as it really is, but rather through our own karmic lens -> ignorance
- There is no independent existence. Everything is a product of causes and effects.
- As far as posessions, is there really an "ours" or "mine?"

(Here Chophel thanked everyone in the room for his lunch, if it weren't for the students there would be no college and he would not have had the opportunity to eat the salad that he had for lunch, that goes as far back as when the college was founded they needed a name, so actually he also thanked George Washington and Thomas Jefferson for his lunch.)

- The same for clothing, they depended on the earth, bugs, cotton, cotton gin, etc....
- We want land for its resources.
- Does the plot really "belong" to the purchaser? Is it "ours"? (uh, no, basically)
- What about the chipmunk that lives on the land, is it "his"?
- All life is sacred. The chipmunk (or ant or whatever) is no better than "I" or you.
- The environment being good or bad is a direct result of karma.
- Pollution, hurricanes, global warming = collection of human karma resulting from self-cherishing.
- To heal the earth, we must create better karma.
- Animals, insects, humans, trees, plants being disturbed/destroyed = bad karma
- Mountains and trees etc. are considered to have what might be called a "higher realm" spirit
- If building in Tibet they will first
    - divine what spirits live in the area (including that of the mountains, trees etc) could be like 84,000
    - purify the area and do prayer ceremonies etc to ensure the spirits are satisfied and assisted to next life
    - plant more trees
    - only then do you build
    - for an example, in Seven Years in Tibet when building the theater they find worms and have to move them before continuing.
    - balance the harm you cause
- Tibetans traditionally keep the environment pure - never even mined gold in the area, made statues and religious objects from earth
- Eventually they would use metals mined from other countries or from their washed-out lowlands
- Be conscious of changing your environment
- Curb your self-cherishing - a restricted concern for his or her own welfare (and for a small circle of loved ones)
- We owe a debt to humanity - basically everyone (and thing) on the earth "The people you don't like have done a lot for you."
- Environmentalism starts with the mind
- Sustainability requires lovingkindess
- Environmentalism then is not just the elements, also helping others, humanity, having compassion, skillful interactions
- All people are equal, no people are bad
- A point that Chophel frequently made this week: Even an "irritating" (to you) person is not independently on their own annoying or irritating, someone else loves them and finds them kind, etc.

<lj-embed id="38" />

Why am I watching so much television? I have books to the right of me, by hook or by crook to the left.

My mom came in and turned on a nanny show which stress me out. Because that's my life. Almost a year of insane children! I wish I was Nanny Jo. A fatter, queerer Nanny Jo. Minus that hat because I think I look ridiculous in hats.

While I'm babbling I thought I'd mention that sea creatures, mostly the deep sea variety, really freak me out! I have no idea why.

Do you have anything that freaks you out? I mean silly things. <lj:music>some new show comin' on</lj:music>

I'm watching a show about Elephants. There is a tiny baby elephant that is starving and I don't think I can watch anymore! Aaaah I hate you, animal planet! Oh, but happy music was just playing and I don't know why.

Because I was thinking about a lesson which is this: don't bleach your leg hair.

Now, like two months ago I had some bleach laying around and some spare time.

You know what happened.

Only it didn't bleach to the nicest shade and some was kinda yellow.

So I trimmed it a little and it felt dumb and I was all, "shit why do I always have to do stupid stuff?"

So it wasn't funny like I thought and today I basically trimmed my leg hair down to stubble because I had roots haha.

And now I have white and black prickly leg stubble.

Awesome!
Hahaha.

Oh man now another episode of the elephant show is on and the baby can barely even stand up.

I want it to make it!

So. Tired.

I'm in bed. My kind of stomach hurts.

Anyway, I was typing a message to Brock earlier this evening and I started to cry.

Not like full on sobbing (more like silent tears), but I didn't have to force anything either.

So this got me thinking about how different life is now and how much not talking to/seeing friends is effecting me. Which I think is a lot.

Anyway, so I was typing and forgot to say a thing or two (like how right it feels even if it sucks, and how glad I am that he got out of Washington and met someone and has a good relationship) but I did tag on an "I love you" and a thanks, which was probably all I needed to say.

Aaaah I'm getting too tired to think straight.

Oh PS. Some kids finally painted a labyrinth on Mary Jo's parking lot. I had the time/chance to walk it but I didn't think I had the energy to focus and be mindful so I just sat in the car in the heat and listened to Sufjan and even talked to my mom on the phone for a while.

There is more but god this text message posting is annoying.

Oh, and damn it! Josh never replied to my email if he got it.

[ETA:
katie i miss you so much! I talk about you a lot to james and i can't express how psyched i am for you to meet him, and I am beyond psyched to see you this week!! And I keep letting my mind wander to the possibility of a maharaja excursion... hehe

I know I haven't expressed it enough because I did what I thought I had to, but moving away from you was very hard. Not that we were attached at the hip, but for as long as i've known you, and as close of friends as we are, and the rarity of your traits and intelligence and personality, and everything we've been through together...
You really mean a lot to me and always will. I love you too. Soon, maybe when I am settled down somewhere, and hopefully extravagantly rich (or not at all), we could live together. Or even near each other.. I never wanted to leave you in washington. It's just a moment of temporary distance in our life-long friendship!

So, I think I am going to throw all our shit in the car and say goodbye to my friends here today, and leave tomorrow.

Du fehlst mir, lieber lieber katja. mein liebchen!

*Snif!]

Buttercup the guinea pig.

I love animals.

I would never put this thing in a situation like this.

I've never seen the kids so nuts.

So, the thing is hiding under the couch because as soon as they convinced their mother to let it out it ran away (surprise).

The dog is freaking out and barking constantly, I don't think the kids have stopped screaming for more than five seconds at a time...

And THEN Jess informs me that over the weekend she had a seizure (while on vacation at Cedar Point, in the hotel room) and doesn't remember being ambulanced there or anything... Apparently the CT came back negative but her oncologist wants her to get an MRI tomorrow so that means no chemo.

I'm a little stressed.

:)

Oh, and now they are in time out... in front of the television...

Nothing I ever do here is going to help.
